In a swift and decisive operation, troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully rescued eighteen passengers who were kidnapped by suspected sea pirates while traveling by boat from Nigeria to Cameroon.
Swift Response to Distress Call
The dramatic rescue unfolded on January 11, 2026, after the 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army Headquarters in Calabar received a critical distress call. The alert indicated that a passenger vessel had been hijacked near the Kombo Fishing Port in Cameroonian waters. According to Major Yemi Sokoya, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the Brigade, the criminals were operating with two speed boats and a wooden boat.
Troops deployed at the Ikang forward base immediately launched a pursuit operation upon receiving the alert. Their rapid response was crucial in intercepting the pirates and their captives.
Exchange of Fire and Successful Rescue
The military pursuit led to a direct confrontation with the hijackers. An intense exchange of gunfire ensued between the troops and the pirates. During the firefight, one of the pirates' speed boats capsized, causing significant disruption to their operation.
Overwhelmed by the army's offensive, the criminals abandoned their victims and fled into the surrounding network of creeks to escape. The troops successfully secured all 18 passengers, which included two infants. Thankfully, all rescued individuals were reported unharmed following the harrowing ordeal.
Army Commander Commends Troops, Calls for Public Support
The Commander of the 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, praised the soldiers for their bravery and professionalism. He stated that the operation highlighted the commitment of the army to protect citizens and secure the nation's waterways.
“This successful rescue operation demonstrates the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of our men and women to protect lives and ensure the safety of our waterways,” General Alimikhena said. “We will continue to dominate our operational environment and safeguard our citizens against all criminal elements.”
Furthermore, the Brigade Commander appealed to the public, especially residents of Cross River State, to actively support the troops by providing credible and timely information. This incident underscores the persistent security challenges on regional waterways and the steadfast role of the 13 Brigade in responding to threats and ensuring the safety of lives along the Nigeria-Cameroon maritime corridor.
