Nigerian Army Troops Successfully Repel Coordinated Ambush in Cross River
In a decisive security operation, troops from the 13 Brigade Nigerian Army have thwarted a dangerous ambush by suspected armed criminals in Cross River State, resulting in the neutralization of four attackers. The incident unfolded on March 12, 2026, as military personnel responded to escalating tensions from a communal disagreement in Odonget Community, Obubra Local Government Area.
Swift Response to Communal Tensions
According to a statement released by Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for Headquarters 13 Brigade, troops deployed at Ochon and Alesi received credible intelligence regarding rising hostilities linked to a local dispute. Acting promptly to prevent a breakdown of law and order, the soldiers mobilized to the area, conducting patrols and a show of force that helped calm the situation and restore normalcy between the concerned parties.
Ambush and Fierce Firefight
After stabilizing the communal environment, the troops began returning to their respective locations. However, they discovered their route had been deliberately blocked by unidentified persons. While attempting to clear the obstruction, the soldiers came under a coordinated ambush by unknown gunmen, leading to an intense exchange of fire.
Upon receiving a contact report from the troops on the ground, reinforcements from the 245 Battalion were immediately deployed with armored and tactical support vehicles to counter the attack. The prompt response enabled the troops to successfully repel and clear the ambush, demonstrating tactical proficiency under fire.
Casualties and Ongoing Operations
Regrettably, one soldier sustained injuries during the engagement and was promptly evacuated to Jennifer Hospital in Ochon, Obubra LGA, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. The troops neutralized four of the armed attackers during the firefight, while several others managed to escape the scene.
In the aftermath of the incident, troops have commenced cordon and search operations in suspected communities linked to the attackers to track down the fleeing criminals and prevent further security breaches. Additionally, a curfew has been imposed in the affected area to forestall further breakdown of law and order and to deny miscreants the freedom to operate.
Military Leadership Commends Troops
The Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the troops in confronting the attackers. He reassured residents of Cross River State of the Nigerian Army's unwavering commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace within its Area of Responsibility.
Members of the public are encouraged to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and provide credible information that will assist ongoing operations aimed at apprehending the perpetrators. Further details will be communicated as the situation develops, according to the military statement.
