The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a significant change to the annual event held on January 15. The day will now be officially known as the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
A New Name for a Dual Purpose
In a statement released on Thursday, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, explained the rationale behind the redesignation. He stated that the new name, Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, more accurately captures the dual essence of the occasion.
January 15 is set aside each year to honour both the living personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifices made by fallen heroes in defence of the nation's territorial integrity and its citizens.
"Previously known as 'Armed Forces Remembrance Day', the name was officially changed to 'Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day' to better reflect the dual essence of the occasion," Uba clarified. He urged all media outlets to adopt the new designation in their future reports.
COAS Charges Troops in Niger State
In related developments, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, has issued a strong charge to troops during his operational tour of formations in Niger State. Addressing officers and men of the 18 Brigade in Bida, Shaibu urged them to remain resolute in degrading and neutralising bandits and terrorists.
He emphasized that this effort is crucial to restoring public confidence and enhancing overall security across the nation. The Army Chief's visit also took him to the 31 Artillery Brigade in Minna, where he tasked troops to remain firm, vigilant, and decisive against terrorists operating in areas like Shiroro and Rijau.
Welfare and Infrastructure Promises
Lieutenant-General Shaibu assured the troops of his unwavering commitment to their welfare, identifying it as a critical factor for sustained operational success. He disclosed concrete plans aimed at boosting morale and effectiveness.
These plans include an enhanced welfare package, the construction of additional accommodation facilities, and the establishment of skills acquisition centres. These initiatives are designed to improve the well-being and provide economic empowerment for the families of military personnel.
"I remain fully committed to prioritising the welfare of troops and their families," Shaibu affirmed. He commended the soldiers for their professionalism and diligence in managing security within their Areas of Responsibility, while also urging them to continue upholding fundamental human rights in line with international standards.
