At least four police personnel have been confirmed dead following a violent assault by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in Borno State. The deadly incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, April 4, 2026, around 1:00 a.m., marking another grim chapter in the region's ongoing security challenges.
Details of the Attack and Casualties
The attackers, arriving in large numbers, stormed the police formation and engaged officers in a prolonged and intense gun battle. Despite resistance from the personnel, the assailants ultimately overpowered them, leading to tragic losses. The confirmed fatalities include:
- Inspector Samuel Ezekiel, who was attached to the Nganzai Division.
- Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of the 58 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Lafia, on special duty at the location.
- Police Constable Bitrus Luka, a member of the crack squad based in Maiduguri.

According to ASP Kenneth Daso, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, the terrorists employed sophisticated weaponry, including Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs), during the assault. This resulted in significant damage to a section of the police station and partially burned an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) parked on the premises.
