The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has declared that the Nigerian Army has identified the activities of foreign jihadists operating near the country's borders and is fully prepared to confront and defeat them. He made this announcement on Monday during the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The event was graced by President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Detection of Foreign Jihadists
General Shaibu stated, “We have already noticed the footprints of foreign jihadists across our borders. However, I would like to assure us all that the Nigerian Army is alert and equal to the task.” He drew parallels to historical challenges overcome by the Nigerian military, including the two World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and ECOMOG missions, expressing confidence that the army would prevail against current security threats.
The Army Chief highlighted that over 80 percent of Nigerian troops are currently engaged in operations against diverse security challenges across the country. He emphasized the Army's commitment to defending Nigeria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, guided by values of selfless service, loyalty, honor, courage, and sacrifice.
Regional Security Context
The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns in the West African region. Neighboring countries have experienced attacks by armed militants, including a recent assault on an airport in Niger by the Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which resulted in casualties. Additionally, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has attempted to infiltrate and overrun military bases in Nigeria, though troops have successfully repelled these attacks.
Government Commitment to Modernization
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Shettima, reaffirmed the administration's commitment to addressing Nigeria's evolving security challenges. The President outlined plans to adopt emerging technologies, enhance military capacity, and invest in indigenous defense production. He stated, “My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness.”
Tinubu emphasized the revitalization of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) as a key priority. He noted, “The revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria stands at the heart of this ambition, and the partnership represented by this forum promises fresh momentum for local production, the creation of skilled employment, and the self-reliance that grows from a nation able to arm itself.” The President also highlighted the importance of the African Land Forces Forum in promoting defense industry growth.
Modernization and Self-Reliance
The President stressed that the government is committed to modernizing the Army to enhance its capacity to meet contemporary security challenges. He aligned with the aim of the organizers to amplify Nigeria's leadership in defense diplomacy and enhance operational capabilities through shared expertise. Tinubu expressed hope that strategic partnerships would significantly boost DICON's capacity to produce high-end combat equipment while advancing local content development.
Commendation for Troops
President Tinubu commended the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army, stating, “To the officers and men of the Nigerian Army, you carry a trust that few are asked to bear, and you carry it with an honour that steadies the whole nation. Serve the people with the same devotion you bring to defending them, for the uniform commands respect only when it protects the weak and upholds the dignity of every citizen.” He concluded that the future of a secure and prosperous Nigeria within a stable and confident Africa would be won through discipline, sacrifice, and unity.
