Poland Praises Nigeria's Key Role as West Africa's Stabilising Force
Poland Hails Nigeria's Stabilising Role in West Africa

The Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Michał Cygan, has officially recognised Nigeria as a crucial stabilising power within the West African region. This commendation highlights the pivotal efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with special focus on the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in combating insurgency and upholding regional security.

Strengthening Defence Ties Between Nations

Ambassador Cygan presented this assessment during a formal visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja on 15 January 2026. He praised the professionalism and resilience demonstrated by Nigeria's military apparatus. Furthermore, the Ambassador expressed Poland's keen interest in identifying practical areas for bilateral defence cooperation to better support Nigeria's key security objectives.

In his response, Air Marshal Aneke emphasised the critical importance of strategic international alliances in tackling modern, asymmetric security threats. He stated that the NAF is dedicated to utilising partnerships with friendly nations to boost operational effectiveness, develop capacity, and improve information sharing. This, he noted, is all in service of Nigeria's national security goals.

Aneke reaffirmed the Air Force's readiness for mutually beneficial partnerships that would enhance counter-insurgency capabilities and contribute to stability both regionally and globally.

Focus on Practical Collaboration and Diplomacy

According to a statement released by the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the discussions centred on fortifying bilateral defence cooperation. The talks placed particular emphasis on identifying specific collaborative areas to support the NAF's ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency missions nationwide.

Ejodame noted that the meeting underscored the significant value of defence diplomacy in building mutual understanding, improving operational coordination, and deepening the overall relationship between Nigeria and Poland.

Engaging Nigerian Youth for Future Security

In a related development, the Nigerian Air Force has called upon the nation's youth to contribute their creativity and intellect towards shaping the future of aerial operations. This invitation is extended through the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Literary Competition for the 2025/2026 cycle.

The competition, which opened on 21 November 2025 and will run until 28 February 2026, is designed as a dynamic platform for young Nigerians. It encourages them to express their ideas, perspectives, and creative interpretations on contemporary issues linking security and technology.

The initiative aims to promote youth engagement, informed advocacy, and innovative thinking. It also seeks to nurture talent that can make meaningful contributions to national development and security. The competition will be conducted in three primary categories:

  • Essay
  • Art
  • Poetry

This structure offers participants the opportunity to engage with the themes through both analytical writing and visual expression.
