Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has emphasized the critical role of the church in praying for national peace and the protection offered by the nation's military personnel.
A Call for Prayer and Unity
Speaking on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Thanksgiving service, Governor Sanwo-Olu addressed the congregation at the Chapel of Christ the Light in Alausa, Ikeja. He stated that the church holds a divine duty to consistently intercede for peace, for wisdom to guide the nation's leaders, and for the men and women in uniform who safeguard citizens.
The Governor paid glowing tribute to members of the Armed Forces, commending their immense service and sacrifice. He noted that the period of remembrance serves as a powerful challenge to every Nigerian citizen to actively promote unity, act responsibly, and maintain mutual respect.
"A nation divided weakens its defenders, and a nation united strengthens its peace," Sanwo-Olu declared, underscoring the symbiotic relationship between national harmony and security.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
In a poignant segment of his address, the Governor painted a vivid picture of the military's silent vigilance. "Every day we wake up to normal routines, travel freely, worship openly, and live without fear; someone somewhere is standing guard," he said. He honored those who watch through the night and bear heavy responsibilities so the nation can thrive in safety.
He extended special gratitude to God for preserving Nigeria and offered thanks for the lives of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and officers who operate in perilous conditions. "Their duty goes beyond profession; it is a calling rooted in discipline, courage, and service," he affirmed.
The Governor led the gathering in remembering fallen heroes, quoting the scripture from John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for others." He assured that while their names may fade from daily conversation, their ultimate sacrifice is permanently etched into Nigeria's national story.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also directed heartfelt words to the families left behind by fallen troops—spouses, children, and parents. He acknowledged their profound sacrifice, carrying the weight of absence and loss with dignity, and asserted that the nation owes them enduring honor, care, and support beyond mere words.
Reflecting on the evolution of the military, he praised the Armed Forces for growing in professionalism, training, and resilience. "Their role extends beyond combat; it includes humanitarian support, civil engagement, and national unity," he noted.
Addressing veterans, the Governor honored their foundational years of service, stating that a grateful nation must learn from and support its veterans, not discard them. He concluded his address with a prayer for eternal rest for the departed, comfort for their families, divine protection for serving personnel, and lasting peace for Nigeria.
