Shettima Prays for Armed Forces, Reaffirms FG Support

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for divine support for Nigeria's security personnel while firmly restating the Federal Government's unwavering commitment to backing the Armed Forces.

Prayers and Tribute at the National Mosque

The Vice President made this known on Friday, January 9, 2026, during a special Juma'at prayer service held at the National Mosque in Abuja. The event was organised to mark the forthcoming 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

In his address, Shettima paid solemn tribute to the fallen heroes of the Nigerian military. He honoured the officers and men who made the ultimate sacrifice defending the nation's territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of its citizens.

Administration's Resolve to Empower the Military

Shettima commended the courage, resilience, and patriotism of currently serving personnel across the Armed Forces and other security agencies. He gave a firm assurance that their sacrifices would not be in vain under the present government.

The Vice President stressed that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains absolutely resolute in its mission. He stated the government is focused on equipping and empowering the Armed Forces with the necessary resources, tools, and institutional support. This, he said, is crucial to decisively tackle the myriad security challenges facing the nation, including:

  • Terrorism
  • Banditry
  • Other threats to national peace

A Day of Celebration and Remembrance

The Vice President's remarks highlighted the dual significance of January 15, a date set aside annually by the Federal Government. The day, recently renamed Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, serves a twofold purpose:

  1. To celebrate and honour serving personnel.
  2. To remember and commemorate those who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

Leading the prayers at the event, Vice President Shettima offered heartfelt supplications. He asked Almighty Allah to forgive the souls of the departed heroes and to grant their families the fortitude to bear the pain of their irreparable loss.

"We pray that Allah forgives our departed officers and men and grants their families the strength to endure these painful sacrifices," Shettima said. "We also pray that the Almighty continues to protect and empower our armed forces to subdue all the crises bedevilling our nation. By God's grace, in the fullness of time, Nigeria shall enjoy enduring peace and prosperity."

He expressed a strong sense of optimism for Nigeria's future. Shettima believes that with sustained government support, the professional commitment of the security forces, and divine guidance, the country will move steadily towards greater stability, unity, and national renewal.
