Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for divine support for Nigeria's security personnel while firmly restating the Federal Government's unwavering dedication to backing the Armed Forces in their fight against the nation's security threats.
Prayers and Tribute at National Mosque
The Vice President made this appeal on Friday, January 10, 2026, during a special Juma'at prayer held at the National Mosque in Abuja. The event was organized to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
In his address, Shettima offered profound respect and honour to the gallant officers and soldiers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. He praised their ultimate sacrifice in defending Nigeria's sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Administration's Resolve to Empower Security Forces
Shettima acknowledged the bravery, resilience, and patriotism displayed by serving members across all military and security agencies. He gave a firm assurance that their efforts and sacrifices would not be wasted under the current government.
The Vice President stressed that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is determined to continuously provide the necessary resources, modern tools, and institutional support required to empower the Armed Forces. The goal is to decisively confront and overcome the challenges of terrorism, banditry, and other threats to national peace.
A Day of Celebration and Remembrance
The event highlighted the significance of January 15, a date set aside annually by the Federal Government to honour the military. The observance was recently renamed to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day to better capture its dual purpose: to celebrate the dedication of serving personnel and to solemnly remember the heroes who paid the supreme price.
Leading the prayers, Vice President Shettima asked Almighty Allah to grant forgiveness to the souls of the departed heroes. He also prayed for their families to be granted the strength and fortitude to bear the pain of their irreplaceable loss.
"We pray that Allah forgives our departed officers and men and grants their families the fortitude to endure these painful sacrifices," Shettima said. "We also pray that the Almighty continues to protect and empower our armed forces to subdue all the crises bedevilling our nation. By God’s grace, in the fullness of time, Nigeria shall enjoy enduring peace and prosperity."
He expressed strong optimism that with sustained government support, the professional commitment of the security forces, and divine guidance, Nigeria is on a steady path towards achieving greater stability, unity, and national renewal.
