President Tinubu Directs Security Chiefs to Maiduguri Following Terrorist Attacks
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive for Nigeria's top security officials to immediately relocate to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. This move aims to coordinate operations and restore stability in the aftermath of recent terrorist attacks that targeted military formations and local communities in the area. The order is part of the Federal Government's swift response to the coordinated assaults, which have caused significant disruption and loss of life.
Sympathy and Solidarity with Borno Residents
While giving the directive, President Tinubu expressed deep sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives and to all residents affected by the violence. He stated, "The recent news from Maiduguri, Borno State, is profoundly upsetting. I mourn those who lost their lives, sympathise with the injured, and stand in solidarity with the people of Borno during this challenging time." This statement underscores the administration's concern for the well-being of citizens amidst the crisis.
Strengthening Operational Coordination
The deployment of security chiefs to Maiduguri is designed to enhance operational coordination among various security agencies, ensuring a more effective and rapid containment of the threat posed by insurgents. Tinubu described the attacks as desperate attempts by terrorist groups to instil fear, noting that these criminals are already under intense pressure from Nigeria's armed forces and other security agencies across multiple theatres of operation. He emphasized, "I want to make it categorically clear that these acts of terror are the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals and terrorist elements trying to instil and spread fear, as they are under constant pressure from our brave armed forces and security agencies."
Commendation for Military and Civilian Efforts
President Tinubu commended the courage and resilience of the Nigerian military and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force for successfully repelling the coordinated attacks on military positions in Borno State. He said, "I must commend the courage and fighting spirit of our patriotic troops who successfully repelled the coordinated attacks by these terrorists on military positions in the state." He expressed confidence that security forces would decisively neutralise the terrorists, describing the Monday attacks as acts of desperation. "Our gallant military and civilian task forces will curtail and put them down," he affirmed.
Enhanced Support and Emergency Response
In addition to the relocation order, Tinubu disclosed that he had recently approved additional equipment and operational support for the armed forces and security agencies to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism operations. He revealed, "Just last weekend, during a security meeting with leaders of security and intelligence agencies, I approved additional equipment and operational support to enhance their capabilities. This effort is already in progress." Furthermore, he directed emergency response agencies to provide immediate medical attention and assistance to those injured in the attacks, ensuring that victims receive timely care.
Reaffirmation of Commitment to Eliminate Terrorism
Reassuring Nigerians of his administration's resolve to eliminate terrorism, President Tinubu declared that no part of the country would serve as a safe haven for terrorists. He stated, "There is no place in Nigeria where terrorists will find safety. We will locate them, confront them, and completely defeat them. Nigeria will not succumb to fear." This strong declaration highlights the government's unwavering determination to protect national security and restore peace in affected regions.
