Nigerian Troops Capture Two Suspected ISWAP Terrorist Informants Along Niger Border in Borno State
In a significant security development, Nigerian military personnel have successfully apprehended two individuals suspected of operating as informants for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group. The arrest occurred during a routine patrol operation along the sensitive Nigeria–Niger international border within Borno State.
Operation Details and Interception
The military operation took place on April 3, 2026, at approximately 031600A hours. Troops from the 5 Brigade, deployed at Forward Operating Base Walada, intercepted the suspects as they attempted to cross from the Kainuwa area along the border axis. The timely intervention prevented what authorities believe was a potential crossing into Niger territory.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Bafanami Mallam and Bakolo Bako. Both suspects are now in military custody where they are undergoing preliminary investigation procedures to determine the extent of their alleged involvement with terrorist networks.
Evidence Recovered During Arrest
During the apprehension, troops recovered several items from the suspects that have raised significant security concerns:
- N159,500 in Nigerian currency
- A Tecno Android mobile phone
- A PalmPay debit card
- A National Identification Number (NIN) card
- A Civilian Joint Task Force identity card
- A Lake Chad Fishermen Association identity card
The recovery of multiple identification documents, including those from security-related organizations, has prompted investigators to examine potential security breaches and infiltration attempts.
Investigation and Security Implications
Security analysts note that the Nigeria–Niger border region has remained a critical flashpoint in counter-terrorism operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP factions. The porous nature of this border has historically facilitated the movement of terrorists, weapons, and illicit materials between the two countries.
Military sources indicate that the preliminary investigation will focus on determining the suspects' precise roles within suspected terrorist logistics and information support networks. Particular attention is being paid to how individuals with multiple identification documents might have exploited security systems and what intelligence they may have been gathering or transmitting.
The arrest comes amid ongoing military operations aimed at disrupting terrorist supply chains and intelligence networks in northeastern Nigeria. Security forces have intensified border surveillance and patrol activities following intelligence reports about increased terrorist movement along international boundaries.
This development underscores the continuing security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin region and highlights the importance of cross-border cooperation between Nigeria and neighboring countries in combating transnational terrorist threats.
