Governor Zulum Denounces Maiduguri Explosions as Despicable and Cowardly
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has issued a stern condemnation of the explosions that rocked parts of Maiduguri on Monday evening. Currently in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj, Governor Zulum described the attacks as despicable, cruel, and cowardly, particularly as they targeted innocent civilians during the holy month of Ramadan.
Statement from the Governor's Office
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum expressed deep sadness over the incidents. "I am deeply saddened by the explosions that occurred in parts of the metropolis on Monday evening. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and those injured as a result of the blast. The act is utterly condemnable, barbaric, and inhumane," said Zulum.
He further emphasized that the recent surge in attacks is likely connected to intense military operations in the Sambisa forest and other insurgent hideouts. The governor assured residents that the military and other security agencies are actively managing the situation, with adequate measures in place to prevent further security breaches in Maiduguri and across Borno State.
Police Confirmation and Casualty Details
The Borno State Police Command has confirmed multiple explosions, suspected to be masterminded by Boko Haram or ISWAP suicide bombers, at various locations in Maiduguri. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Keneth Daso, the blasts occurred simultaneously at the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and the popular Monday Market general area.
Daso, who was engaged in rescue operations during the telephone conversation, stated that it was difficult to provide an exact number of casualties as the mission was ongoing. However, he admitted that many people were killed and injured in the incidents. He promised to release detailed information once rescue operations are completed.
Security Response and Public Advisory
The Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and Base 13 Maiduguri are currently on the ground, conducting assessments of the affected areas. ASP Daso advised residents to avoid the impacted zones and remain indoors for their safety. Emergency contact numbers have been released for public use: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
Additional Reports on the Explosions
Sources indicate that four blasts took place between approximately 6:45 pm and 7:00 pm around key areas including the Monday Market, Kaleri, Post Office, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital axis. These explosions resulted in several fatalities and injuries.
Another security source revealed that suicide bombers, including a female operative, were responsible for some of the blasts. Notably, the explosion at the Post Office area originated from a tricycle (Keke Napep) at one of the busiest bus stops in the heart of the metropolis, highlighting the brazen nature of the attacks.
Governor Zulum's call for increased vigilance and heightened security measures, especially in places of worship as the festive period approaches, underscores the ongoing challenges in the region. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in Borno State.
