The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has called on police officers in the state to uphold professionalism in the execution of their duties. He stated that this aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu.
Security Conference in Awka
Mr. Orutugu made this appeal during a security conference organized by the police command in Anambra on Tuesday in Awka. According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the conference was attended by eight area commanders and 56 divisional police officers in the state.
Professionalism as Key to Public Trust
Mr. Orutugu emphasized that professionalism is the only way the police can earn and sustain public trust and confidence. He said, “I wish to use this medium to re-echo the IGP’s directives against any form of indiscipline, corruption, extortion, abuse of office or any conduct capable of bringing the force into disrepute.” He added, “Officers must remain courteous, professional and respectful in dealing with members of the public. The confidence of our people is one of our greatest operational assets and we must continue to earn and sustain it.”
Operational Successes Amid Challenges
The police commissioner noted that despite the prevailing security challenges, the command has continued to perform admirably in tackling insecurity. He stated, “I am pleased to note that despite the prevailing security challenges, this Command has continued to record remarkable operational successes. The successes recorded have inspired greater commitment in response to the expectations of the IGP, the government of Anambra and indeed the people to continue to be safe and grow.”
Symbol of Honour and Sacrifice
Mr. Orutugu reminded the officers that the police uniform is a symbol of honour, sacrifice, and public trust, underscoring the need for professionalism in their duties. He urged them to remain courageous and committed to their constitutional responsibilities.
