The Delta State Police Command has issued a firm reminder to residents that the prohibition on fireworks remains fully in force as the Christmas season approaches. The command has warned that anyone involved in the use, sale, or public display of pyrotechnics will face arrest and legal prosecution.
Command's Stern Warning Against Pyrotechnics
In a statement released on Thursday, December 4, 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, conveyed the position of the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda. The commissioner explicitly stated that the ban comprehensively covers "the use, sale, and display of pyrotechnics, including fireworks and firecrackers known as 'knockouts' and 'bangers'."
The police highlighted that this measure is a critical part of their strategy to prevent and reduce criminal activities during the Yuletide period. Historically, criminals have exploited the loud noises from fireworks to create diversions, mask the sound of gunshots, or conceal other unlawful acts such as burglaries and coordinated attacks.
Directives to Parents, Guardians, and Retailers
The command's statement included specific advice and warnings for different groups within the community. Parents and guardians were strongly advised to caution their children and wards against using these prohibited items.
Furthermore, retailers and sellers were explicitly warned to immediately withdraw from the sale of fireworks and related products. The police made it clear that anyone found violating this ban will be arrested and prosecuted. Additionally, all confiscated goods will be impounded by the authorities.
Statewide Enforcement Strategy Activated
To ensure strict compliance with the ban, Commissioner Abaniwonda has directed a coordinated enforcement effort across the state. He has tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, along with all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders, to monitor the situation and address any violations promptly.
The commissioner also expressed his appreciation for the cooperation of Delta State residents thus far. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any incidents involving the use or sale of fireworks. Reports can be made at the nearest police station or through the command's official control room numbers.
A National Security Measure During Festivities
The enforcement of fireworks bans during festive periods like Christmas and New Year has become a standard security protocol across Nigeria. In recent years, police commands in states including Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have issued similar directives.
Beyond crime prevention, fire service authorities have consistently warned about the increased risk of fire outbreaks in markets and densely populated residential areas when fireworks are used indiscriminately. The Delta State Police Command's reaffirmation aligns with this broader national effort to ensure public safety and order during celebrations.
