As the Christmas and New Year season approaches, the Delta State Police Command has issued a firm directive to strictly enforce the existing ban on fireworks across the state. The move aims to address serious security concerns during the festive period.
Zero-Tolerance Stance Against Pyrotechnics
In a statement released on 5 December 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, conveyed the order from the State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda. The command emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards the use, sale, storage, and public display of all pyrotechnic devices. This includes popular items commonly known as knock-outs and bangers.
The police argue that these fireworks often serve as a cover for criminal activities. “Experience shows that criminally-minded persons can take advantage of fireworks to unleash terror on law-abiding residents,” Edafe stated. He clarified that this is not a seasonal rule but a crucial, year-round security protocol.
Broader Security Measures for Festive Season
This crackdown forms part of wider strategies to prevent crime in Delta State, which has been dealing with incidents of armed robbery, cult violence, kidnappings, and communal clashes. The police stated they cannot allow any additional factors that might increase public fear or hinder emergency responses.
The command has issued specific warnings to two key groups:
- Parents and Guardians: They are urged to control their children and wards, preventing them from buying or igniting any fireworks.
- Traders and Sellers: They have been instructed to immediately remove all such items from their shelves. Failure to comply will result in arrest and prosecution.
All confiscated goods will be seized as evidence, and offenders will face the full wrath of the law.
Statewide Surveillance and Enforcement
To ensure full compliance, Commissioner Abaniwonda has mobilized the police force. He has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Units to commence rigorous surveillance and enforcement operations in communities throughout Delta State.
The police command also expressed gratitude to residents who have already adhered to the ban. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any instances of fireworks sale or use to the nearest police station. This community cooperation is seen as vital for ensuring a peaceful and secure yuletide celebration for all Deltans.
