The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a stern warning to Commissioners of Police nationwide, holding them accountable for misconduct within their commands. This came as he presided over the passing-out parade of 1,068 newly trained constables in Akwa Ibom state on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
New Constables Authorized to Carry Firearms Immediately
In a significant policy shift, the new constables are now permitted to carry firearms immediately after training, a departure from the previous practice of waiting years into service. This move aligns with the federal government's community policing strategy to enhance local security.
The recruits underwent intensive firearms and tactical training in collaboration with the state government, focusing on modern policing techniques such as arms drills, tactical movement, vehicle interception, counter-ambush operations, weapon handling, and combat exercises.
IGP Disu Emphasizes Accountability and Mentorship
During his visit, IGP Disu met with senior officers of the state command, urging them to mentor the new constables and lead by example. He stressed that discipline starts from the top, warning that any officer violating Force Order 237 on the use of firearms would face dismissal and prosecution.
He also condemned a recent incident in Delta state involving an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who has been dismissed and will face prosecution for bringing disrepute to the force.
Professionalism Key to Effective Policing
The Inspector-General urged all officers to uphold professionalism, describing it as essential for effective policing and public trust. He commended the Akwa Ibom state command for being the first in Nigeria to issue certificates to newly trained constables and thanked the state government for its support.
Earlier, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 6 praised the IGP for attending the event and highlighted the cooperation between commands in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
IGP Disu's Six-Point Agenda
In a related development, IGP Disu outlined a six-point agenda for his administration, focusing on professionalism, modernism, accountability, integrity, community partnership, and trust. These values, he said, will guide his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
