Kano Police Enforce Okada Ban in 9 LGAs, Night Restrictions for Tricycles
Kano Police Enforce Okada Ban, Tricycle Night Curfew

The Kano State Police Command has issued a firm directive for the strict enforcement of the existing ban on commercial motorcycles, commonly known as Okada, across several parts of the state. The command has also reinforced the restriction on commercial tricycles (Keke NAPEP) from operating between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am daily.

Heightened Security Concerns Prompt Action

This renewed enforcement drive is a direct response to heightened security challenges within Kano State. Authorities cite increased security concerns, exacerbated by frequent incursions of bandits into communities bordering Katsina State, as the primary reason for the crackdown. The police aim to curb criminal activities often associated with the use of these commercial vehicles.

The enforcement will specifically cover nine local government areas: Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (specifically the Jido area), and Dawakin Kudu (covering Tambuwal, Gurjiya, and Jido wards).

Arrest and Prosecution for Violators

In a statement released on Monday, 1st December 2025, the command's Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, made the position of the police unequivocally clear. He stated that enforcement teams have been fully empowered to identify, arrest, and prosecute any individual found violating the ban or the night-time restriction.

"The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies in the State, hereby reiterates the enforcement of the existing ban on the conveyance of passengers on all forms of motorcycles and the restriction of commercial tricycles from operating between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am daily in the State," Kiyawa declared.

He emphasized that the laws providing for these bans, as earlier announced by the Kano State Government, remain in full force. The measures are designed solely to enhance public safety and security across the state.

Public Cooperation and Reporting Channels

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has urged all residents, particularly operators of motorcycles and tricycles, to comply with the regulations. He called for public cooperation with security agencies to maintain law and order.

Residents are encouraged to actively report any violations or suspicious activities to the authorities. The command provided the following emergency contact numbers for such reports:

  • 08032419754
  • 08123821575
  • 09029292926

CSP Kiyawa further noted that the enforcement effort is being carried out in collaboration with the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA). He stressed that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure full compliance for the ultimate safety and security of all residents in Kano State.
