The Lagos State Police Command has officially clarified that the explosion recorded in the Mushin area of Lagos on Monday, June 22, was caused by a mechanical failure and not an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack, as initially speculated. The state Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, provided this clarification during a press briefing on Thursday, June 25, following a thorough investigation by security operatives.
Investigation reveals no explosive evidence
Commissioner Fatai stated that detailed investigations carried out by security operatives found no evidence linking the incident to any form of explosive attack. Forensic examinations conducted at the scene did not uncover traces of explosive substances, detonators, initiation mechanisms, explosive residues, or other materials typically associated with bomb explosions.
According to Fatai, preliminary findings indicated that the incident resulted from the sudden release of pressure from a mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle. The force of the pressure impact caused the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle to shatter, leaving the occupant with minor injuries.
Police classify incident as mechanical explosion
Following the outcome of the investigation, the police officially classified the occurrence as a mechanical explosion. They assured residents that there was no indication of terrorism or any coordinated explosive attack linked to the incident. The command further urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.
Commissioner Fatai emphasized the importance of relying on official sources for accurate information and cautioned against speculation that could heighten tensions in the community. He reiterated the command's commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining order in Lagos State.
