Police Enforce Total Ban on Fireworks During Christmas Celebrations
Residents of Imo and Plateau states will experience a quieter Christmas celebration this year as both state police commands have announced a comprehensive ban on fireworks and knockouts throughout the yuletide season. The decisive measure aims to prevent injuries, forestall fire outbreaks, and maintain public order during the festive period.
Imo State Police Takes Firm Stance
The Imo State Police Command officially declared the prohibition on Sunday, November 23, through a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry. The command explicitly reiterated the total ban on the sale, distribution, and use of fireworks, knockouts, and all forms of pyrotechnics across the state.
According to the police statement, this ban is crucial for ensuring public safety. The command warned that anyone found selling, possessing, or using pyrotechnics during public holidays, community events, or private celebrations will face immediate arrest and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police for Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has directed that regular patrols and targeted operations be intensified to ensure full compliance with this directive. He appealed to residents to cooperate with security operatives and report any illegal activities involving fireworks.
Plateau State Follows Suit
Similarly, the Plateau State Police Command announced its own statewide ban on Saturday, November 22. In a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer SP Alfred Alabo, the command explained that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and security ahead of the festive celebrations.
The Plateau command highlighted that fireworks often create unnecessary panic among residents, thereby disturbing public peace. The statement emphasized that anyone violating this order by selling, using, or possessing knockout articles and fireworks will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to warn their children and congregations against disregarding the directive. He stressed that public cooperation would help ensure a peaceful and safe environment for all residents before, during, and after the festive season.
Enhanced Security Measures for Peaceful Celebration
Both police commands have assured residents that enhanced security measures have been implemented to guarantee a safe and peaceful yuletide period. The Imo State Police Command specifically acknowledged the continuous support of the public in maintaining peace and safety, expressing confidence that residents would comply with the fireworks prohibition.
The coordinated action by both state police commands demonstrates a proactive approach to seasonal security challenges, prioritizing citizen safety over traditional celebrations that could potentially endanger lives and property.
