Poly Student Found Dead in Ondo, Police Probe Suicide

A 20-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, has been found dead in his rented apartment in the Emure-Ile area. The deceased, identified as Audi Emmanuel, a Computer Engineering student, was discovered after neighbors reported a strong, unpleasant odor emanating from his room.

Neighbors Forced Entry After Foul Smell

According to reports, the smell became so disturbing that residents decided to break into the apartment when repeated attempts to contact Emmanuel failed. Inside, they found his lifeless body hanging. The incident was immediately reported to the police.

Police Confirm Suspected Suicide

Abayomi Jimoh, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that officers responded swiftly to the scene. He noted that the body has been evacuated and deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy. Jimoh said, “The Ondo State Police Command confirms the report of a suspected suicide incident. Preliminary observations suggest a case of suicide; however, a thorough investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances.”

The police expressed sympathy with the deceased’s family and urged the public to seek help and speak out during moments of emotional distress.

In a separate tragedy, a 400-level medical student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Adewole Emmanuel, collapsed and died on April 22 while waiting for his final exam. The Ife University Medical Students Association confirmed the incident, describing it as deeply painful. An anonymous source said Emmanuel showed no prior illness and suddenly collapsed during exam preparations.

Earlier, Obafemi Awolowo University directed students to vacate campus for a three-week mid-semester break after protests over transportation and welfare issues disrupted activities. The demonstrations led to blocked roads and safety concerns, prompting the Senate to approve the temporary closure.

In another development, the university declined approval for the proposed venue of Peter Obi’s lecture due to short notice from organizers, citing insufficient time for security and logistical arrangements.
