50 Vehicles Impounded in Lagos as Police Enforce Number Plate Rules
50 Vehicles Impounded in Lagos Over Number Plate Violations

The Lagos State Police Command has impounded approximately 50 vehicles across the metropolis on Monday as part of a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced, or missing registration number plates. This action aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening security, and denying criminal elements the opportunity to conceal their identities and activities.

Commissioner Confirms Ongoing Operation

Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, stated that more vehicles were still being brought in, with others held at divisional and area command levels. He warned that impounded vehicles might face prosecution to serve as a deterrent to motorists who ignored earlier warnings.

Security Risks of Obscured Plates

Tijani stressed the security risks associated with obscured number plates, noting that such vehicles could be used by criminals to evade detection by road cameras. He explained: “If criminals use vehicles with covered plates for crime, even our cameras cannot capture anything. If the vehicle is stolen, tracking becomes nearly impossible.”

Call for Compliance

Urging motorists, transport operators, fleet owners, and the general public to ensure their vehicles carry valid, duly issued, and clearly visible registration number plates at all times, Tijani warned that the exercise is serious and will be continuous.
