Bauchi Panic: Gunmen Kill 33-Year-Old Man in Home

Residents of the Gwallaga area in Bauchi metropolis have been thrown into a state of panic following the brutal murder of a 33-year-old man, Najamu Aminu, who was found dead in his room on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The discovery of his lifeless body in a pool of blood has sent shockwaves through the community, with indications suggesting he was attacked while sleeping at night.

The incident was reported to the Township Police 'A' Division, whose operatives promptly evacuated the corpse. Within three hours, the body was released to the family for burial, a move that has since drawn criticism from human rights advocates.

Human Rights Group Raises Concerns

Speaking on Friday, the team lead of the Organisation for African Child Development and Human Rights Protection, Barr. Alkasim Muhammad, expressed dismay over the alleged silence of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) days after the homicide. The organisation alleged that as of June 10, 2026, the DPO had neither invited nor arrested any suspect in connection with the killing.

The group questioned the handling of the case at the divisional level, asking: “Why did the DPO so quickly release the deceased’s body for burial within three hours without proper investigation? Why was the case not transferred to the State CID for further investigation, given the nature of the crime? Why has the police failed to revisit the crime scene for evidence gathering?”

Demands for Action

The organisation called on the Commissioner of Police to set up a special investigative team to thoroughly probe the case. It also demanded the exhumation of the victim’s body for autopsy, the immediate arrest of suspects for interrogation, and the replacement of the DPO within 24 hours, citing possible compromise in the investigation. Furthermore, it urged the constitution of a panel to review the officer’s handling of the case.

Police Response

Meanwhile, the Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed that the case was reported at the A Division, Township, and that preliminary investigations had commenced. He stated that the case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and thorough investigation. Operatives of the SCID have already taken over the matter to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and to apprehend those responsible.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, assures the public that the Command will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice is served,” the statement added. He also urged members of the public with useful information to assist the investigation by reporting to the nearest police station or the investigating team.
