Bauchi schoolgirls battle flood after windstorm rips off roof

Female students at Government Girls’ Secondary School in Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi State, were captured on video battling severe flooding inside their dormitory after a heavy windstorm tore off the roof. The footage, released to appeal for urgent intervention, shows the teenagers using their slippers to sweep dirty water out of their rooms.

Storm leaves dormitory exposed

The flooding occurred when a powerful downpour accompanied by strong winds blew off the roofing sheets of the hostel, leaving the building exposed to the elements. In the video, the dormitory is visibly missing its roof, with rows of metal bunk beds pushed aside to allow the students to dry the floors. The girls are seen frantically moving water toward the doorways, their belongings and bedding likely soaked.

Call for help

The video was shared on social media by blogger Linda Ikeji, drawing attention to the dire living conditions at the school. The post has sparked concern among Nigerians, with many calling on the Bauchi State government and the Federal Ministry of Education to provide immediate relief and repair the damaged infrastructure. No official statement from school authorities or government officials has been released as of press time.

Impact on education

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by many public schools in Nigeria, where inadequate maintenance and lack of funding leave students vulnerable to weather-related disasters. Education advocates warn that such conditions can disrupt learning and endanger the health of students, especially during the rainy season.
