The FCT Police Command has refuted reports of an attempted kidnapping at a primary school in the Gbagalape area of Nyanya, Abuja. Contrary to earlier claims, the police stated that after thorough investigation, no such incident occurred.
Police Investigation and Findings
On Thursday, June 4, 2026, at around 10:30 a.m., officers from the Nyanya Division received a distress call alleging a kidnapping at Phase 1 Primary School. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) immediately dispatched officers and surveillance teams to the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that students had suddenly started shouting "kidnappers" and fleeing the school premises, causing panic among teachers and community members.
Police cordoned off and thoroughly searched the school. After extensive questioning of individuals inside and around the school, no kidnapping incident was confirmed. No suspects were found, and no victims were identified. Additionally, patrols of surrounding hills, boundaries, and nearby schools were conducted as precautionary measures.
Public Reassurance
The police command urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic. Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities or emergencies to the nearest police station promptly.
Community Reaction
Following the initial panic, some parents rushed to schools in neighboring Kurudu and Nyanya to withdraw their children. Some schools also dismissed pupils early as a precaution. One parent stated, "My daughter's principal at Kurudu Government School asked them to go home early due to the incident." Another parent said, "I had to pick my child early because we heard about a kidnapping in Orozo weeks ago."
FCT Education Secretariat Response
The Head of Information at the FCT Education Secretariat, Kabiru Musa, confirmed that no official report of the incident had been received. He stated, "To the best of my knowledge, we have not received the report, and we did not authorize any school to shut down."
The police continue to monitor the situation and assure residents of their safety.
