The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has initiated a comprehensive enforcement operation targeting vehicles that violate regulations on tinted glass, concealed number plates, and improper vehicle registration. Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi announced this during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, June 5.
Reasons for the Enforcement
Sanusi stated that the operation is a response to the increasing number of criminal activities involving vehicles with tinted windows, covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles. He noted that such vehicles are often used in “one-chance” robberies, kidnappings, and other violent crimes, as they allow suspects to conceal their identities and evade detection. “This poses a serious threat to public safety,” he emphasized.
Operation Details
The commissioner clarified that the exercise is not meant to harass law-abiding citizens who have legitimate approval for tinted glass. Instead, it aims to deny criminals the cover they exploit to commit crimes against innocent residents of the FCT. Since the enforcement began, more than 30 vehicles have been impounded for violations including illegal tinting, concealed number plates, and lack of proper registration.
Sanusi warned that owners and operators of such vehicles will face prosecution under the laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023. He reaffirmed the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention to protect lives and property in the territory.
Appeal for Public Cooperation
The police commissioner urged residents to cooperate with security agencies, remain vigilant, and report suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to the nearest police station or emergency contacts. He also appealed for public understanding as enforcement operations continue across the FCT.
