The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning against the overloading of vehicles, describing the practice as an "audition for disaster" that endangers the lives of innocent Nigerians. The agency's caution came after its officials intercepted several dangerously overloaded vehicles across the country.
FRSC Condemns Reckless Overloading
In a series of posts on its official social media handle, the FRSC highlighted the grave risks associated with overloading. "Is the driver okay? Is the loader okay? Because this is not transportation... this is an audition for disaster! One sudden brake, one sharp bend, and lives could be lost. #OverloadingKills," the agency captioned one of the photos of the intercepted vehicles.
The FRSC further questioned the logic behind such dangerous practices: "At what point does 'cargo' become a moving building? This isn't smart business; it's a rolling road hazard waiting to happen. Safety must never be sacrificed for profit."
Call for Responsibility
The agency also expressed disbelief at the decision-making behind the overloading, asking, "By the way, who on earth looked at this load and said, 'Yes, this is perfectly fine to drive'?" The FRSC emphasized that overloading remains one of the fastest routes to road crashes and urged the public to prioritize safety over profit. "No delivery is worth a life. We must say no to overloading," the agency stated.
The FRSC's warning serves as a reminder to transporters and the general public about the severe consequences of overloading, which can lead to loss of control, increased stopping distances, and higher risks of fatal accidents. The agency continues to enforce road safety regulations to protect all road users.
