FRSC Warns Truck Operators After Fatal Crash in Cross River

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to operators of articulated vehicles, tankers, and trucks to strictly comply with traffic laws and speed limits or face sanctions. The warning follows a recent fatal crash involving students of the University of Cross River (UNICROSS), which resulted in four deaths and six injuries.

Statement by Sector Commander

In a statement released in Calabar, the Cross River Sector Commander, Innocent Tommy Etuk, expressed concern over recurring fatal crashes and loss of lives on major routes. He spoke after the UNICROSS accident, where the injured are currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and Aruba Hospital in Calabar.

Causes of Crashes

Etuk attributed many crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles to brake failure, wrongful overtaking, excessive speed, and loss of control. He described these incidents as preventable and emphasized the need for strict adherence to road safety regulations.

The sector commander reaffirmed the FRSC's zero-tolerance stance on reckless driving, particularly along the Odukpani–Itu road. He warned that offenders would face the full weight of the law.

Call for Stakeholder Support

Etuk also called on stakeholders to support enforcement efforts, including joint operations with other security agencies, to reduce road crashes and fatalities in the state. He urged all road users to prioritize safety and cooperate with authorities to prevent further tragedies.
