Governor Amuneke Explains Why He Rejected INEC Youth Ambassador Offer
Governor Amuneke Rejects INEC Youth Ambassador Over Free Speech

Nigerian content creator Kevin Chinedu, widely recognized for his comedic character 'Governor Amuneke,' has publicly explained his decision to turn down an offer to serve as a youth ambassador for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The announcement was made in a video posted on his X account on Monday, May 4, 2026.

A Proud Moment Clouded by Conditions

Chinedu described the offer as a significant milestone in his career as a creator. 'I have never felt as proud of myself when I got that message,' he said in the video. The proposed role would have involved collaborating with other public figures to encourage young Nigerians to participate in civic duties such as voter registration and elections.

However, the skitmaker sought clarity on whether the appointment would impact the nature of his content, which often features political satire and commentary. 'I asked a simple question… Am I going to still be able to criticise INEC if I’m appointed?' he recounted.

According to Chinedu, he was informed that he could continue creating content and promoting civic awareness, but he would not be allowed to criticise INEC directly. This condition raised concerns about his ability to remain independent, given that his work focuses on governance and public accountability. 'The moment I heard that, what seemed like congratulations disappeared… I wish it did not come with certain conditions to box my voice,' he added.

Importance of Creative Independence

Chinedu emphasized that his content is shaped by his personal experiences and feedback from audiences across Africa, which motivate him to address issues affecting ordinary people. He advised fellow influencers to be mindful of the responsibility that comes with having a platform. 'If you have a platform today and you do not compromise… That voice is not just yours,' he stated.

Despite declining the offer, the content creator expressed gratitude for the recognition and indicated openness to future collaborations that do not restrict his creative freedom. 'I am open to working with brands and institutions, but not under conditions that restrict my content,' he said.

Related Developments

In a separate incident, Chinedu previously shared an alleged message offering him a lucrative deal to campaign for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. He posted a WhatsApp screenshot claiming he was invited to join a 'league of dollars,' with promises of larger financial rewards compared to his comedy earnings. The post generated mixed reactions, with supporters of the ruling party accusing him of fabricating the message.

Additionally, comedian Mr Macaroni recently explained why he declined an invitation from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. During an interview on the iFineDie Hub podcast, Mr Macaroni stated that the invitation was not properly delivered and emphasized that elected officials should engage citizens respectfully, especially on matters related to the EndSARS protests.
