Sunday Igboho offers to guard Oyo public schools amid insecurity
Igboho writes Makinde to guard Oyo schools

Amid rising insecurity marked by abductions and bandit attacks, and 26 days after the kidnap of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Yoruba nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has formally written to Governor Seyi Makinde offering to guard public schools in the state.

Security proposal from Iru Ekun Private Security

Igboho, founder of Iru Ekun Private Security Limited, sent a correspondence to the state Commissioner for Education, copied to Governor Makinde, pledging to partner with the government to enhance security in public schools. The letter, dated June 9, 2026, and sighted by The Guardian on Thursday, requests a database of all public schools and their locations in Oyo State.

“Sir, Iru Ekun Security Network’s plan, upon receipt of the requested information, is to ensure that at least two trained members of the outfit are stationed at each public school identified across Oyo State,” the letter reads. “Their mandate will be to guard school environments, monitor access points, liaise with principals and community vigilantes, and prevent unlawful incursion by criminal elements.”

Signed by Igboho and the legal adviser of Iru Ekun Security Network, Junaid A. Sanusi, the letter underscores the organization’s commitment to constructive collaboration with government, traditional institutions, and communities in safeguarding schools and ending the cycle of abductions targeting students and teachers.

Call for perimeter fencing

The security outfit also advised the Oyo State government to consider erecting fences around all public schools to facilitate easier guarding by Iru Ekun Security Network personnel. While commending ongoing rescue efforts by the Oyo State government and federal security agencies, the group emphasized that prevention should be prioritized to ensure schools remain safe havens for learning, not targets for marauders.

“Time is of the essence. Every day without preventive deployment exposes our children and teachers to avoidable risk. With proper data and perimeter security, we can create a protective shield around every public school in Oyo State,” the letter stated.

Iru Ekun Security Network reaffirmed its readiness to work with the government, SUBEB, TESCOM, school management boards, and community stakeholders to deliver a comprehensive, constructive, and security-wise solution that restores confidence in public education across Oyo State.
