The Lagos State Police Command has officially dismissed viral social media reports alleging that armed bandits have invaded several areas in the state, including Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, and Oke-Afo. The command warned that these false reports have already resulted in the tragic death of a commercial motorcycle rider.
Police Statement on Social Media Rumors
In a statement released on X on Monday, police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi clarified that there is no security crisis, coordinated attack, or invasion of any community or school in Lagos State. She emphasized that the circulating posts are false, misleading, and intended to create unnecessary fear and panic among residents. Schools across the state remain safe, and security agencies are maintaining surveillance and adequate presence in communities.
False Alarm Turns Deadly
The police revealed that the spread of these false claims has led to an avoidable loss of life. A 24-year-old commercial motorcycle rider, Kulaha Ayuba, was attacked by youths who mistakenly believed he was one of the alleged bandits. Acting on unverified online information, the youths labeled him a Fulani bandit and assaulted him to death. His motorcycle was stolen, and his body was later found in a swamp. Following police intervention, 15 suspects have been arrested and are under investigation. The command assured the public that all culprits will face the full weight of the law.
Condemnation of False Information
The police condemned the deliberate spread of false information, which incites public disorder, ethnic profiling, and mob violence. They urged residents to verify information through official channels before sharing and warned that those responsible for originating or deliberately circulating false content will be prosecuted.
Old Ikorodu Video Dismissed
Earlier, the police refuted another viral video purportedly showing the recent arrest of Fulani men with arms in Ikorodu. Adebisi stated that the footage is over three years old and does not reflect the current security situation. She stressed that recirculating outdated content is misleading and creates unnecessary panic. The command urged the public to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified content.
Political Context and Public Assurance
These statements come amid heightened public discussion on insecurity ahead of the 2027 general elections. Former APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo cautioned against political exploitation of security issues, urging Nigerians to avoid narratives that heighten fear. The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding. He directed enhanced deployment of personnel and operational assets to strategic locations, in collaboration with other security agencies, to ensure the continued safety of residents and visitors.
