The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has confirmed the death of a Nigerian national, Emeka Charles Iroegbu, who was allegedly killed while in police custody in South Africa. Iroegbu died on June 28, 2026, in Sunnyside, Pretoria, reportedly at the hands of Tshwane Metro Police officers.
Second killing of Nigerian in South Africa
This incident follows the killing of another Nigerian, Musa Yunana Joe, who was shot dead by unidentified suspects on the same day, June 28, in Witbank, Mpumalanga Province. NUSA has called on South African authorities to identify and apprehend the perpetrators behind both killings.
NUSA demands justice
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 5, NUSA national publicity secretary Akindele Olunloyo condemned the alleged murders, describing them as “senseless and brutal.” He stated, “We demand prompt, transparent and exhaustive investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and face the full wrath of the law.”
Engagement with Nigerian diplomatic missions
The diaspora association said it is working with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate General in Johannesburg to monitor the situation. NUSA added that it has commenced engagement with the police to ensure a thorough investigation and that justice prevails.
Appeal to Nigerians in South Africa
Olunloyo urged all Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant. “Please exercise extreme caution in your daily activities, know your surroundings, and report any suspicious activities to the local police,” the spokesman added.
