NYSC DG Warns Corps Members: Avoid Unauthorised Travel, Night Journeys
NYSC DG Warns Corps Members Against Unauthorised Travel

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has issued a stern warning to serving youth corps members. He has strongly advised them against embarking on any form of travel without obtaining the necessary permission from scheme officials.

Directive Issued at Edo Orientation Camp

The warning was delivered directly by the NYSC boss while he was addressing members of the 2025 Batch 'C' stream. This address took place at the NYSC Orientation Camp located in Edo State. The DG emphasised that avoiding unauthorised movement is a critical step in preventing avoidable dangers on the highway during the service year.

Taking Responsibility for Personal Security

In a formal statement released by the scheme's spokesperson, Gbenga Fanegane, further details of the DG's message were outlined. Brig Gen. Nafiu urged every corps member to take full responsibility for their own safety. This involves maintaining a high level of vigilance at their respective Places of Primary Assignment (PPA).

A key part of this security advisory is the strict avoidance of night journeys. The DG highlighted that travelling after dark significantly increases the risks faced by young people on Nigerian roads.

Caution on Social Media and Social Vices

The NYSC management also used the opportunity to counsel corps members on responsible behaviour, both online and offline. The statement explicitly instructed them to always verify information and establish facts before sharing anything on various social media platforms.

Furthermore, the DG called for complete abstinence from all forms of social vices. He listed specific activities that could jeopardise their safety and future, including:

  • Cultism
  • Cyber crimes (often called Yahoo Yahoo)
  • Political thuggery
  • Other related negative acts

The overarching message from the NYSC leadership is clear: the safety and positive development of corps members remain a top priority. Adhering to these guidelines is essential for a successful and incident-free service year.
