The Oyo State Government has extended the 48-hour curfew imposed on 10 local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park by an additional 24 hours. The extension was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Musibau Babatunde, in a memo issued on Thursday evening in Ibadan, the state capital.
Background of the Curfew
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government had initially imposed a 48-hour curfew on Tuesday, effective from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., across the affected local government areas. The curfew was part of ongoing efforts to address kidnapping and other security challenges in communities surrounding the Old Oyo National Park.
Extension Details
With the latest extension, the curfew will now continue until Saturday. The affected local government areas include Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo, and Atiba LGAs. The government urged residents to comply with the curfew for their safety and to support security operations.
Security Concerns
The Oyo State Government has been proactive in tackling insecurity, particularly in rural areas. The Old Oyo National Park region has seen increased criminal activities, prompting the government to take decisive measures.
