Police Commissioner Sanusi Gives DPOs 2-Week Ultimatum to End Robbery in Abuja

The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, has issued a two-week ultimatum to Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the Abuja metro area to eradicate robbery activities in the city centre. The directive was given during a meeting with 17 DPOs under the metro area command over the weekend.

Meeting Focuses on Rising Security Concerns

Sanusi stated that the meeting was convened to evaluate the current security situation and enhance strategies to counter emerging threats across Abuja. He highlighted specific concerns including traffic robbery, vehicle theft, the notorious "one-chance" robbery menace (where criminals pose as commercial vehicle operators to rob passengers), motorists driving against traffic, and other public safety challenges.

DPOs Face Sanctions for Non-Compliance

The police commissioner warned that officers who fail to achieve the directive within the stipulated timeframe would face disciplinary measures. He also expressed concern over the activities of commercial motorcyclists operating on major roads, vandalism of properties, illegal parking on highways, and traffic congestion within the city. Sanusi directed DPOs and Area Commanders to prioritise security in the city centre, while he would personally oversee security matters in Abuja suburbs.

Public Support Sought for Enhanced Security

Sanusi instructed the Area Commander, Metro, to provide rigorous supervision and ensure full compliance with the order, emphasising that negligence would not be tolerated. He urged residents to support police operations by providing timely and credible information that could assist efforts to improve security across the nation's capital. The directive comes as authorities intensify measures to address criminal activities and improve safety within Abuja.

Context of Broader Security Efforts

This ultimatum follows a recent tragic incident in Ogun State, where a former broadcaster, Mrs Kitan Oyesiku, and her security guard were killed by armed men at her residence. The FCT police command is now taking proactive steps to prevent similar occurrences in Abuja.
