Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold has been arrested and faces life in prison after being accused of masterminding a kidnapping and armed robbery plot stemming from a $250,000 dispute. According to Tampa police, Arnold is the “primary conspirator” in an alleged scheme to kidnap and rob three individuals he believed had previously robbed him and others at an Airbnb in Largo, Florida.
Details of the Alleged Plot
Arnold, 23, is accused of orchestrating a plan in which he and six alleged co-conspirators lured the victims to an apartment where they were viciously beaten. One of the victims was Arnold’s personal driver, who has denied involvement in the initial robbery, according to the Detroit Free Press. The three adult male victims suffered “visible injuries from being battered, held at gunpoint, and pistol-whipped before their personal property was stolen and they were ordered to leave” in February, police said.
Charges and Potential Sentence
Arnold has been charged with four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison. He has denied the allegations through a statement from his agency. The other six alleged co-conspirators have also been arrested.
The Initial Robbery
On February 1, Arnold had “multiple items of personal property” stolen from an Airbnb he occasionally occupied with the alleged co-conspirators and friends, according to police. Two days later, Arnold and three others reported more than $250,000 in property loss to the Largo Police Department. Arnold claimed he lost roughly $100,000 in cash, watches, jewelry, designer bags, shoes, and a cell phone, per the Detroit Free Press.
Retaliation and Kidnapping
Arnold believed two of the three victims of the alleged beatdown were involved in the initial robbery, but Tampa police investigators concluded they were not. On February 3, Arnold allegedly reached out to two co-conspirators to set up a meeting with one of the suspected individuals. Around midnight on February 4, the three victims arrived at the apartment, where two conspirators hid in a closet and then ambushed them, holding them at gunpoint, hitting them, and stealing their property. One co-conspirator allegedly streamed the altercation to Arnold and two others while they traveled to the apartment, and Arnold gave directions via a group chat.
Aftermath and Arrests
Arnold arrived about an hour later with two more individuals and directed them inside. The victims were forced into their vehicle and left the scene around 1:40 a.m. ET. Three co-conspirators then entered a car driven by Arnold. The victims reported the crime to Tampa police, leading to the arrest of six individuals between February 4 and March 21: two 19-year-old females, a 23-year-old man, a 24-year-old man, a 26-year-old man, and a 27-year-old man. Two have since agreed to plea deals, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Arnold's Statement and Court Appearance
Arnold turned himself in at Orient Road Jail on June 24, maintaining his innocence. The Florida state attorney’s office accuses him of “coordinating and directing” the alleged robbery and beatdown. He remained in custody as of 10:46 p.m. ET on Wednesday, per the Detroit Free Press. In a statement, Denise White, CEO of EAG Sports Management, said: “Terrion Arnold categorically denies any involvement in the matters underlying the allegations made against him and maintains his innocence. There is no credible evidence linking Mr. Arnold to these allegations. Instead, the government appears to be relying on testimony from multiple convicted felons who have admitted their own involvement and may have substantial incentives to shift blame in an effort to lessen their sentences. Mr. Arnold looks forward to his day in court and is confident that the judicial process will lead to his ultimate vindication.”
The Lions also issued a statement: “We are aware of the legal situation regarding Terrion Arnold. We will not comment at this time out of respect for the ongoing legal process.” Arnold is scheduled to make his first appearance in Hillsborough County court on Thursday.
