Thermos Recalls 8M Bottles After Permanent Vision Loss

Global manufacturer Thermos has issued a voluntary recall of more than 8 million insulated food jars and bottles after reports of severe injuries, including permanent vision loss, caused by a defect that leads to explosive lid failures.

Recall Details

The recall, conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), covers approximately 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and about 2.3 million Sportsman Food and Beverage Bottles sold in the United States and other markets over several years.

The affected products have a design flaw that allows pressure to build up inside the container when hot or perishable food is stored for extended periods. When opened, the pressure can cause the stopper or lid to eject forcefully, becoming a dangerous projectile.

Injuries Reported

At least 27 injuries have been reported, ranging from cuts and bruises to serious facial injuries. Multiple cases involve users suffering permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye by the ejected stopper.

Affected Models

The recalled products include specific model numbers: SK3000, SK3020, and SK3010. These items were widely distributed at major retailers including Walmart, Target, and online marketplaces over the past decade.

Consumer Action

Thermos advises consumers to immediately stop using the affected products and follow official recall instructions. Customers can receive replacement components or refunds depending on product condition. The company is working with regulators to ensure safety and prevent further incidents. Consumers should check model numbers carefully to determine if their products are part of the recall.

Safety Concerns

The incident has sparked widespread concern, with many consumers shocked that everyday household items could cause such severe injuries. Safety experts highlight the importance of proper pressure-release design in insulated containers, especially those used for hot liquids or sealed food storage. While recalls of consumer goods are not uncommon, the scale of this incident and reports of permanent eye damage make it one of the most serious safety alerts involving household kitchen products in recent years. Authorities urge affected users to act quickly to avoid further risk.
