UNILAG VC Warns Students Against Excessive AI, Social Media Use
VC Cautions Students on AI, Social Media Overuse

The Vice-Chancellor of Wellspring University in Benin, Professor Isaac Ajayi, has cautioned students against the excessive and unregulated use of social media and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Delivering the warning during the university's 17th matriculation ceremony, he emphasized that such overuse could become significant sources of distraction.

Professor Ajayi addressed the newly matriculated students, urging them to prioritize academic engagement that demands originality, critical thinking, and meaningful contributions to knowledge. He advised them to avoid shortcuts and ensure their work remains authentic, properly referenced, and ethically conducted.

“In this digital age, I must caution you against the excessive and unregulated use of social media. While it has its benefits, it can also become a major source of distraction. Use it wisely and ensure it does not take precedence over your academic and personal development,” Ajayi stated.

The Vice-Chancellor also encouraged the students to take full advantage of the entrepreneurial and digital training opportunities embedded in their academic programs. He urged them to become job creators rather than job seekers upon graduation.

Mental Health Advocate Links Social Media to Youth Challenges

Separately, mental health advocate Oluwatoke Owoseni has attributed the rise in mental health challenges among Nigerian youths to excessive social media use and a growing lack of contentment in society. Owoseni, who serves as the Portfolio Manager of Lagos Minds—an initiative under the Lagos State Ministry of Health providing free counseling services—made this observation while addressing corps members of the 2026 Batch A Stream II at the orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

She clarified that having a mental health issue does not equate to being called a lunatic or indicate a severe crisis. Instead, she noted that the stress and pressure individuals face in their daily activities are taking a toll on their mental well-being.
