A tragic incident occurred in Midtown Manhattan on Monday night when a 56-year-old woman fell into an uncovered manhole and later died from her injuries, according to police reports.
Details of the Incident
The victim, a resident of Westchester County, had parked her Mercedes-Benz SUV near the intersection of East 52nd Street and 5th Avenue, close to Cartier and Nike stores. Around 11:20 p.m., as she stepped out of her vehicle, she fell into an open Con Edison utility hole, plunging approximately 10 feet.
Emergency Response
First responders arrived at the scene to find the woman unconscious and unresponsive inside the manhole. She was promptly rescued and transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not yet released the victim's name pending notification of her family. Con Edison, the utility company responsible for the manhole, has launched an investigation into why the cover was missing.
A Con Edison spokesperson expressed deep sadness over the incident, stating: "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole.
