Three University Students Killed in Horrific Ikorodu Truck Accident
A devastating road accident has plunged the academic community of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) into mourning after three students were crushed to death by a sand-laden truck in Ikorodu, Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred on November 8, 2025, around Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, when a speeding truck experienced complete brake failure, leading to a catastrophic chain of collisions.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the unregistered sand-laden tipper was traveling at excessive speed when it lost control due to mechanical brake failure. The massive vehicle rammed into multiple vehicles and tricycles along the busy corridor, creating scenes of chaos and destruction.
Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA spokesperson, confirmed in an official statement that the accident claimed the lives of three LASUSTECH students - two males and one female - who died instantly at the scene. Seven other individuals, including tricycle operators, sustained serious injuries in the horrifying crash.
The vehicles involved in the multiple collision included:
- An unregistered sand-laden tipper
- A Toyota Corolla (registration SMK 42 AJ)
- An MPV bus
- Four tricycles
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Emergency responders from LASTMA, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police were quickly mobilized to the accident scene. The coordinated rescue operation saw seven critically injured victims rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
The remains of the three deceased students were evacuated and deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary while authorities worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow in the area.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed profound sadness over the preventable tragedy, emphasizing that the crash was completely "avoidable." He lamented the recurring pattern of overspeeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and defective braking systems causing needless deaths on Lagos roads.
Bakare-Oki issued a strong appeal to truck operators and commercial drivers to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance and adhere to speed limits to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
This latest incident adds to the growing concern about road safety in Lagos, coming just months after another fatal accident along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in September 2025 that claimed six lives and left nine others seriously injured.
