8 Dead in Fatal Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash

A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of eight people on the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The fatal crash, which also left eleven others injured, involved an 18-seater passenger bus and a large truck.

Details of the Tragic Collision

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 1 January 2026, at approximately 3:00 p.m. It happened at the NASFAT turn along the expressway. According to information gathered, an empty Volvo truck with registration number AKM 547 YQ was loaded with bottles. An eyewitness reported that the yellow truck attempted to make a U-turn towards the Ibadan direction.

At that moment, an 18-seater Mazda bus marked APP 943 XP, which was travelling at a high speed, rammed into the truck. The passenger bus was carrying 21 people at the time of the collision.

The impact of the crash was severe. Eight people were confirmed dead. The deceased included four adult males, two adult females, and two toddlers. A total of eleven passengers sustained various injuries. The injured victims comprised five males, four females, and two more toddlers. Two male passengers were reported to have escaped unharmed.

Emergency responders, including officials from the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), the Police, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), arrived at the scene at about 3:15 p.m. The Commander of TRACE for the Mowe/Ibafo Division, A.S. Adedeji, coordinated the rescue operation.

The injured were swiftly evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention. Four victims were taken to the State Hospital in Abeokuta, while seven others were rushed to FAMOBIS Hospital.

Aftermath and Traffic Clearance

Following the rescue operations, both vehicles involved in the crash were removed from the road. They were taken to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) police station located at Redeemed City for further investigation.

The combined efforts of TRACE, Police, and FRSC personnel ensured that the accident scene was cleared efficiently. Commander Adedeji confirmed that after the evacuation of vehicles and victims, both lanes of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were reopened, allowing for the free flow of traffic once again.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding and improper manoeuvres on Nigeria's highways, especially during the festive period when traffic volume is high.
