A devastating road accident claimed the lives of twelve people on Sunday, January 11, 2026, after a speeding truck loaded with coal lost control on the busy Abuja–Lokoja Highway.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The Federal Capital Territory Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Felix Theman, confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 11:47 a.m. near Gada-Biyu village. According to Theman, the accident involved four vehicles: an 18-seater Sharon bus, two Volkswagen Golf cars, and the fatal truck.
The fully-laden coal truck, traveling from the Lokoja direction at high speed, veered off the road after the driver lost control. It ploughed into a group of bystanders who were waiting by the roadside to board vehicles.
Victims and Immediate Aftermath
Twelve individuals died instantly at the scene. The victims comprised four adult males, two adult females, four male children, and two female children. Some were identified as residents of Gada-Biyu village.
Three other persons sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Abaji General Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Theman reported that the truck driver and his conductor fled the scene immediately after the crash, likely to avoid potential mob action.
The bodies of the deceased have been released to their families for burial in the community.
Official Cause and FRSC Response
The FRSC sector commander attributed the tragedy directly to speeding, dangerous driving, and subsequent loss of control by the truck driver. He revealed a disturbing pattern, noting this was the second reported crash involving the same truck along the Abuja–Lokoja Highway.
In response, the FRSC stated it would meet with the management of the transport company involved. Furthermore, the corps has directed its Yangoji Unit Command to relocate motorists who park by the roadside at Gada-Biyu to pick passengers to safer, designated areas to prevent future occurrences.
This tragic event underscores the persistent dangers on Nigerian highways and highlights the critical need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and responsible driving practices.
