Tragedy Strikes in Oke-Odo as Drunk Driver Claims Life

A devastating incident occurred over the weekend in the Almaroof area, inward Pleasure, Oke-Odo, Lagos, where an elderly woman lost her life after being struck by a vehicle driven by an intoxicated motorist. The event, which took place on 10 November 2025, highlights the grave dangers of drunk and reckless driving on Nigerian roads.

Details of the Fatal Collision

Preliminary reports from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) indicate that the driver, operating a white Pathfinder Jeep with registration number JJJ 118 HX, was under the influence of alcohol and driving at a dangerously high speed. The situation worsened when the vehicle experienced a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The Jeep veered off its path and violently hit the unsuspecting elderly woman who was walking by the roadside. The impact was severe and resulted in her immediate death.

Operatives from LASTMA responded swiftly to the scene. Their quick action led to the apprehension of the driver, who was attempting to flee. The officers secured the area to prevent further accidents and ensure traffic could continue to move smoothly.

Official Response and Investigation

In an official statement, Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, confirmed that personnel from the agency promptly notified the Ile-Epo Police Division. The police provided immediate security support and took charge of the investigation. The severely damaged vehicle was towed from the scene and handed over to the police for a detailed forensic examination.

Using a mobile phone found with the deceased, LASTMA officers were able to contact and inform her family about the tragic event.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep concern over the recurring fatal accidents caused by drunk drivers and poorly maintained vehicles in Lagos. He strongly condemned the recklessness and moral failure displayed by such motorists, emphasizing that these actions violate the sanctity of human life and will not be tolerated.

Bakare-Oki urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and speedy investigation to ensure the driver faces full legal consequences under the state's traffic and criminal laws. He stated, "The sanctity of human life is inviolable. The continued slaughter of innocent citizens through sheer recklessness and moral irresponsibility is intolerable. Every motorist must imbibe discipline, sobriety, and an abiding respect for human life while navigating our roads."

LASTMA has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and property of all road users through consistent enforcement, public education, and collaboration with security agencies to maintain safety and order on Lagos roads.
