Easter Sunday Tragedy: Four Dead, Eight Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash
A devastating lone auto crash occurred on Easter Sunday night along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, resulting in four fatalities and eight individuals sustaining injuries. The incident took place in front of Christopher University, casting a shadow over the holiday celebrations.
Details of the Accident
The crash involved a White Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AGL789YL. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, the accident happened at approximately 9:18 p.m. on April 6, 2026. Odunsi confirmed that 13 persons were involved in the crash, comprising 11 adult males and 2 adult females.
Casualty Breakdown:
- Four persons died on the spot.
- Eight persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, including 7 adult males and 1 adult female.
Causes and Official Statements
Odunsi attributed the cause of the accident to a combination of tyre burst and speed violation, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle. He emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits and maintaining vehicle tires in good condition.
In a related statement, Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), also confirmed the accident. Akinbiyi noted that excessive speed by the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus was a primary factor in the crash.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
The injured victims were promptly taken to Famobis Hospital for urgent medical attention. The deceased were transported to morgues for preservation. Specifically, the bodies were deposited at Idera Morgue, as stated by the FRSC, while TRACE reported that four presumed corpses were taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) Morgue in Sagamu.
Rescue efforts involved multiple agencies, including officers from the FRSC, Nigeria Police, and OGSAES, who were on the ground to manage the situation. The Motor Traffic Division (MTD) of the Redeemed Police Station took custody of the crashed vehicle, along with all recovered properties and luggage belonging to the passengers, for safekeeping and further investigation. Additionally, the accident vehicle was towed from the scene and taken into police custody at Mowe MTD Police Redeem Division.

Sector Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He urged all motorists to strictly adhere to speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition to prevent such tragedies.
