Four Killed in Ogun Expressway Crash as Bus Rams into Stationary Truck
A devastating road accident on the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway in Ogun State has resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals. The fatal crash occurred late on Monday night, March 23, 2026, when a commercial bus collided with a stationary truck, leading to immediate fatalities at the scene.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The collision took place around 11 p.m. at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the expressway. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, the accident involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BDJ 482 XC and a blue MAN Diesel truck registered as RSH969XC, which belongs to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.
Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, the FRSC spokesperson for Ogun State, provided a detailed account in an official statement released on Tuesday. She confirmed that all four occupants of the bus—two male adults and two female adults—sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. No survivors or additional injuries were reported.
Cause of the Accident and Immediate Aftermath
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC have identified speeding as the primary cause of the crash. Odunsi-Oyewole explained that the truck was being towed when the towing chain suddenly snapped, leaving the vehicle stationary on the road. The speeding Toyota Hiace bus subsequently rammed into the immobile truck, resulting in the catastrophic collision.
Following the impact, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, abandoning the truck. Rescue operatives from the FRSC arrived at the location within eight minutes of receiving the distress call, demonstrating a swift response to the emergency.
Response and Ongoing Investigations
The remains of the victims have been evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode for further procedures. Meanwhile, officers from the Nigeria Police Force, specifically the Imushin Division, have taken custody of the vehicles involved in the crash and have commenced a thorough investigation to ascertain further details and potential liabilities.
Safety Advisory from FRSC
In light of this tragic event, Akinwunmi Fasakin, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, has issued a stern advisory to motorists. He urged drivers to strictly adhere to speed limits, especially during night travel when visibility and reaction times are often compromised. Additionally, Fasakin emphasized the importance of ensuring that towing equipment meets rigorous safety standards to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.
This incident underscores the critical need for enhanced road safety measures and compliance with traffic regulations to safeguard lives on Nigeria's highways.
