The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has sounded a critical alarm for motorists across Ogun State, urging extreme caution as the dangerous ember months approach. With historical data showing increased road traffic incidents during this period, the agency is taking proactive measures to prevent unnecessary tragedies.
Heightened Risks During Critical Period
Anthony Uga, the Ogun State Sector Commander, delivered a stern warning during a recent safety sensitization program at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Mowe. He emphasized that the ember months—September through December—typically witness a disturbing surge in road accidents due to increased travel and festive activities.
"The ember months have historically been characterized by increased road traffic crashes," Uga stated with concern. "We must collectively work to reverse this tragic trend through responsible driving behavior."
Essential Safety Measures Every Driver Must Follow
The FRSC commander outlined non-negotiable safety protocols that could mean the difference between life and death:
- Speed Management: Strict adherence to speed limits and adjusting speed according to road conditions
 - Vehicle Maintenance: Regular checks on tires, brakes, lights, and other critical components
 - Rest Periods: Adequate rest before long journeys to combat driver fatigue
 - Seat Belt Compliance: Mandatory use of seat belts by all vehicle occupants
 - Sobriety: Absolute zero tolerance for driving under substance influence

Religious Institutions Join Safety Campaign
Recognizing the influential role of religious organizations, the FRSC is partnering with churches and mosques to amplify their safety message. The program at RCCG Mowe represents a strategic approach to reach millions of worshippers who regularly travel on Ogun State roads.
Uga praised religious leaders for their cooperation, noting that "road safety is a collective responsibility that requires everyone's participation." The initiative aims to transform regular road users into safety ambassadors within their communities.
Enforcement and Education Go Hand-in-Hand
While education remains paramount, the FRSC commander made it clear that enforcement actions will intensify during this high-risk period. Traffic officials will be particularly vigilant about:
- Overloading violations in both commercial and private vehicles
 - Speed limit infractions, especially around populated areas
 - Vehicle roadworthiness and documentation compliance
 - Dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving behaviors

The ultimate goal, according to Uga, is to ensure that every journey ends safely and the festive period remains truly celebratory for all families in Ogun State and beyond.
