Imo Community Rises Against Infrastructure Neglect
The residents of Amaimo, Umukabia community in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State have taken to the streets in peaceful protest against the terrible condition of their roads and lack of basic infrastructure. The demonstration occurred on November 20, 2025, with community members urgently calling for government intervention at all levels.
Community Leader Voices Collective Anguish
Led by Nnorom Christian, the protesters expressed deep frustration about their inability to access neighboring communities or transport their agricultural products to markets. The community leader described living in their ancestral homes as becoming increasingly nightmarish due to the infrastructure collapse.
Amaimo Umukabia is a significant and active community in Ehime Mbano, bordered by Umuna, Ikpem, and Nzerem communities. The area boasts a substantial population primarily engaged in farming and trading activities.
The community specializes in producing palm oil, cassava, coconut, fruits, and timber, but these economic activities are severely hampered by the road conditions. Christian emphasized that teachers cannot reach local schools, directly impacting children's education.
Multiple Crises Stemming from Road Neglect
The poor infrastructure has triggered several secondary crises affecting all aspects of community life. Transportation costs have skyrocketed, making movement prohibitively expensive for residents.
Access to medical facilities has become dangerously limited, putting lives at risk during emergencies. The educational system suffers as both students and teachers struggle with daily commutes, compromising learning quality.
Farmers face particularly severe challenges, experiencing significant post-harvest losses because they cannot transport their produce to markets efficiently. The community described their major roads as death traps that are overgrown with bushes and completely impassable after years of government neglect.
Beyond road rehabilitation, the community is requesting:
- Access to clean water and reliable electricity
- Support for local agriculture and commerce
- Improved healthcare and educational facilities
Community Ready to Partner for Development
In a significant show of commitment, the community expressed willingness to partner with government and contribute to development projects. Christian clarified that they are not merely asking for aid but demanding their fundamental right to a better life as Nigerian citizens.
The people of Amaimo Umukabia emphasized they deserve good living conditions and basic infrastructure, begging their leaders to intervene and rescue them from their current suffering. They seek immediate action to make their roads safe for travel and restore dignity to their community.
