In a bold move to tackle the notorious seasonal gridlock, the Lagos State Government has announced comprehensive 24-hour traffic management operations across the metropolis. The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), comes as the city prepares for its annual influx of holiday travelers.
Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi revealed that the enhanced operations will focus on critical corridors including Ikorodu Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, and other major arteries known for congestion during festive periods.
Round-the-Clock Deployment Strategy
The ambitious plan involves continuous deployment of traffic personnel in three strategic shifts, ensuring constant monitoring and management of traffic flow. "Our officers will maintain 24-hour presence on these critical routes," Commissioner Osiyemi emphasized during the announcement.
Special attention will be given to areas surrounding shopping malls, markets, and event centers where increased human and vehicular activity typically creates bottlenecks. The commissioner specifically mentioned Ikeja, Alimosho, and Surulere as zones receiving enhanced coverage.
Proactive Measures for Holiday Commuters
Beyond extended hours, the strategy includes prepositioning tow trucks and recovery vehicles at strategic points for rapid response to breakdowns and accidents. The government is also implementing special traffic management plans for major markets including Mushin, Oshodi, and Agege.
Motorists are advised to cooperate with traffic officers and adhere to traffic regulations. The commissioner warned that illegal parking and driving against traffic would attract strict penalties, emphasizing that these violations significantly contribute to gridlock.
Collaborative Approach to Urban Mobility
The initiative represents a collaborative effort between LASTMA, law enforcement agencies, and local government authorities. This multi-agency approach aims to create a seamless travel experience for residents and visitors alike during what is typically the busiest travel period of the year.
