LAMATA Driver in Custody After Fatal Airport Road Accident

The Airport Police Command in Lagos has made a critical arrest following a tragic road incident that claimed the life of a young woman. The command has taken into custody a driver employed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, identified as Adewale Abiodun. He is accused of being responsible for a fatal accident involving a 19-year-old female pedestrian and then fleeing the scene.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The unfortunate event occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the popular Airport Bus Stop in Ikeja, Lagos State. According to the police report, the young victim had just alighted from a bus and was walking towards the airport area when she was struck by an Ashok Leyland LAMATA bus with registration number MUS 139 YL, driven by the suspect.

Immediately after the collision, the driver did not stop to render aid or report the incident. Instead, he chose to flee, abandoning the critically injured victim. Bystanders rushed to help and took her to the Air Force Base Hospital in Ikeja. Tragically, their efforts were in vain, as she was confirmed Brought In Dead (BID) upon arrival. Medical personnel attributed her death to the severe injuries sustained from the impact.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Upon receiving the report, the Airport Police Command, led by the Police Public Relations Officer Mohammed Adeola, swiftly initiated an investigation. A coordinated manhunt was launched to track down the fleeing driver. The command engaged with LAMATA management to assist in identifying and locating the suspect.

This collaboration proved successful. LAMATA officials subsequently located the driver, Adewale Abiodun, and brought him to the Domestic Police Division of the Airport Command. The suspect has been formally taken into police custody, where he has provided an initial statement regarding the events of that day. Investigations into the precise circumstances of the accident are ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command, Dr. Olufunke Ogunbode, has spoken out on the matter. She described the incident as a grave and unfortunate loss of life. Commissioner Ogunbode maintained the command's commitment to ensuring that justice is served in this case.

She issued a strong warning, vowing that acts of negligence and reckless driving on public roads would not be condoned. This arrest sends a clear message about the serious consequences of hit-and-run offenses and the authorities' dedication to upholding road safety and accountability.
