LAMATA to Prosecute Military, Others for BRT Lane Abuse

LAMATA Threatens Legal Action Against Unauthorized Users of BRT Lanes

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has issued a stern warning, threatening to arrest and prosecute military personnel, local council officials, and other individuals found illegally using the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes. This announcement comes in response to a growing trend of unauthorized vehicles, including those operated by para-military agencies and private owners, flouting the dedicated corridor rules.

Strict Enforcement of BRT Lane Regulations

LAMATA has clarified that only designated BRT buses and franchised vehicles regulated by the authority are permitted to use these lanes. Exceptions are made solely for emergency response vehicles, such as fire trucks and ambulances, when actively responding to crises. Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication at LAMATA, emphasized that the abuse of these lanes by unauthorized users is undermining the system's efficiency and safety.

Ojelabi stated, "This trend is deeply concerning and erodes the gains made in improving urban mobility across Lagos. Unauthorized use disrupts scheduled operations, endangers passengers, and contributes to traffic congestion." He added that the regulations are in full force and will be strictly enforced, with penalties including fines, vehicle impoundment, and other legal sanctions as per Lagos traffic laws.

Commitment to Transport Order and Safety

LAMATA has called for cooperation from all stakeholders to maintain a world-class transport system in Lagos. The authority remains dedicated to ensuring order, safety, and efficiency across the state's transport network and will take decisive action against violators, regardless of their status or affiliation. This move aims to preserve the BRT system's purpose of providing fast, reliable, and safe mass transit for commuters.
