Lekki-Epe Expressway Inferno: Two Killed, Warehouses and Shops Destroyed in Gas Tanker Crash
A catastrophic early-morning collision on the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos has resulted in a tragic loss of life and extensive property damage, following a fiery crash between a gas tanker and a tipper truck. The incident, which occurred near the Tera Ahmeed bus stop in Sangotedo, ignited a blaze that rapidly spread to adjacent structures, causing widespread destruction.
Details of the Devastating Collision
According to reports, the accident unfolded around 2:36 a.m. on Saturday when a 20-tonne tipper truck, traveling from the Epe direction, collided with the rear of a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker. The gas tanker had reportedly failed to pull over from the highway, remaining parked on the expressway. The impact of the collision immediately sparked a fire, which quickly escalated due to the flammable nature of the tanker's contents.
Rapid Fire Spread and Property Destruction
The ensuing inferno spread rapidly from the crash site, engulfing three adjoining warehouses and ten roadside shops in the vicinity. Among the affected properties were a gym and a generator house, which were completely destroyed by the flames. The fire posed a significant threat to nearby structures, including a Total Petrol Filling Station and its fully loaded 33,000-litre PMS tanker, which were at risk of ignition.
Emergency Response and Containment Efforts
Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, including teams from Lekki Phase II, Oniru, and Epe II Fire Stations, responded swiftly to the scene. Their prompt action was crucial in containing the blaze and preventing further escalation. Thanks to their efforts, the Total Petrol Filling Station, its tanker, and several other properties were saved from destruction, averting a potentially larger disaster.
Recovery and Tragic Loss of Life
After the fire was extinguished, emergency personnel recovered several vehicles from the affected premises, including three Sienna buses, a Toyota Corolla, and a forklift, all of which had been parked in the area. Tragically, the tipper truck driver and his assistant, both adult males, were burnt beyond recognition in the blaze and pronounced dead at the scene. In a stark contrast, the gas tanker driver managed to escape unharmed, adding to the somber nature of the incident.
Implications for Road Safety in Lagos
This devastating accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and vehicle management on Lagos's busy expressways. The failure of the gas tanker to pull over from the highway, as reported, raises questions about compliance with traffic regulations and the risks posed by stationary heavy vehicles on major roads. Authorities are likely to review safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The Lekki-Epe Expressway, a critical artery in Lagos, has seen numerous accidents in the past, underscoring the need for enhanced safety measures and driver awareness. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of negligence on the road, urging both drivers and regulatory bodies to prioritize safety to protect lives and property.
